Among the displays at Nissan’s booth at the KL International Motor Show 2013 (KLIMS13) is an unusual Nissan Almera. It looks like someone decided to use it as a ‘canvas’ for an art project and indeed that was the idea behind the ‘Pimp My Almera’ contest organized by Edaran Tan Chong Motor (ETCM).
The car in display is the entry chosen from among submissions by design students from top colleges in the Klang Valley who were invited to express their creative flair and imagination. During the first phase, participants from Dasein Academy of Art, Saito College and IACT College produced submissions reflecting their own particular artistic vision. From these, with the input and assistance of their instructors, a final entry was shortlisted to represent each school.
Three finalists received RM5,000 each and moved on to the second phase of the contest where their entries were then displayed on Nissan’s Facebook page, allowing the public to cast their votes for the final selection process. The public voting period took place between September 13 and October 12, 2013.
When voting ended, the entry by Chuang Xin Yi from IACT College was the winner. Her ‘retro-poppin’-inspired design concept won the Grand Prize of RM20,000. In addition to the prize money, her winning design was transferred to an Almera which is now on display at the motorshow.
The other 2 finalists, Ho Shu Qi from Dasein Academy of Art and Lee Tieng Chiew from Saito College, each received RM5,000 for their efforts.
“We at ETCM are extremely proud to have had the participation of the top design institutions and colleges. I can honestly say that we were impressed with the creativity and talent shown by many of the participants, so it was tough narrowing the entries to the final three selected,” said Tan Keng Meng, Director of Marketing & Product Planning at ETCM.
