Fake parts usually start to appear in the market when the sales volumes of certain brands or models start to become significant. As Japanese brands have been in Malaysia for a long time, there are fake parts which slip into the market and motorists may not be aware they are not genuine items. Where Korean makes are concerned, the sales volume has been growing since Hyundai entered the market in the early 1990s and now that the number of Korean vehicles on the roads are quite large, fake parts are now being sold.
There have been news reports on the sale of fake Hyundai and Kia parts by unauthorized auto parts dealers and these are usually fast-moving parts such as oil filters, air filters, brake pads and spark plugs. The authorities have been taking action by seizing such parts which, according to the reports, are priced similarly as genuine parts. Thus, motorists who buy them unknowingly not only get cheated but also place their vehicles are risk as fake parts can cause damage due to their poor quality.
According to Dennis Ho, MD of Sime Darby Motors (Malaysia, Thailand and Taiwan), owners need to be wary of such products and that they should not to risk their safety by using parts that may not be genuine.
“Hyundai-Sime Darby Motors (HSDM) urges customers to service their vehicles only at authorized Hyundai service centres to ensure that parts used in their vehicles are genuine,” Mr. Ho said. To encourage owners to use authorized Hyundai service centres, there is an ongoing promotion which offers up to 20% discount on selected genuine parts.
The promotion, which will end on July 31, 2018, also offers a 10% discount on labour costs, a mystery gift for customers who spend RM500 and above on service, as well as a 15% discount for a fuel system cleaner. Owners of the Grand Starex Royale MPV are also entitled to exclusive discounts of up to 50% on genuine parts and two mystery gifts for a spend of RM500 and above on service.
Hyundai Genuine Parts are tested under various simulated extreme conditions to ensure quality, reliability and durability. They are also backed by a 6 months/10,000-km warranty, something which a fake part won’t provide!
Mr. Ho said that when owners bring in their vehicles to authorized service centres, trained and certified service personnel are then able to examine the condition of their Hyundai vehicles and authenticate the parts used, especially if the vehicles have been serviced at unauthorized centres.
“Continuous education on the safety hazards of using counterfeit parts is important. Customers can be assured that authorized service centres use only genuine parts and can offer customers a peace of mind when it comes to the safety of their vehicles,” assured Mr. Ho.
