A team of 32 volunteers from UMW Toyota Motor Sdn Bhd (UMWT) recently braved the flood-prone areas of Seberang Prai Utara in Penang to assist in the relief efforts. The staff, who were from the UMWT headquarters in Selangor, had earlier initiated a donation drive to collect funds to purchase dry food, groceries, towels, blankets and other necessities for distribution to the flood victims housed at relief centres.
UMWT worked closely with National Disaster Management Agency and identified two relief centres at Sebarang Prai Utara which had a large number of affected residents. The volunteers handed over the essentials packed in ration boxes to 220 victims at the Sekolah Kebangsaan Padang Menora and Sekolah Agama Rakyat Labuh Banting relief centres. Toyota vehicles were used for the logistics operation to support the relief activity.
During the relief activity, the company also provided assistance to 20 of its employees in Penang who were badly affected by the flood. Under UMWT’s internal support welfare program, the employees were given an immediate cash relief and ration box to assist them with their daily needs.
The Flood Assist efforts and the corresponding service campaigns are part of UMWT’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) undertaking which focuses on not only caring for the flood victims and customers but also the company’s own employees.
“It is heart-warming to see numerous organizations, volunteering groups, and NGOs coming together irrespective of creed and religion to help, during the recent food. We also encouraged our staff to join relief efforts to help the flood victims not only to provide essential items to people at the affected areas but also to assist them to get back to their normal life,” said Ravindran K., President of UMWT.
