As mentioned in our earlier report, Volkswagen Passenger Cars Malaysia (VPCM) is introducing special editions of its Polo, Vento and Jetta which it calls ALLSTAR editions. According to Erik Winter, Managing Director of VPCM, the ALLSTAR range is in line with VPCM’s mission to provide Malaysians with value-added benefits in a Volkswagen.
The Polo ALLSTAR went on sale on May 13 and today, the company launched the Vento ALLSTAR, with the Jetta version due for launch in June. All three models are assembled locally at the DRB-HICOM manufacturing complex in Pekan, Pahang, so it allows VPCM the flexibility to create special editions with accessories.
Additionally, besides the Vento ALLSTAR, VPCM has also developed a GT variant which gives the sedan a sporty outlook with RM9,000 worth of additional items. The items include door mirror wraps, black door strips and boot garnish, leather upholstery, aluminium sports pedals a GT aerokit and of course emblems on the door sills and mats to identify the version.
The Vento GT, priced from RM89,888, also comes with a satin black roof finish and is available in two colours – Reflex Silver and Candy White. It is powered by a 1.2-litre turbocharged direct-injection TSI engine producing 105 ps/175 Nm (highest torque in its class) which goes to the front wheels through a 7-speed DSG transmission. Although powerful, the engine is also fuel-efficient and is claimed to be able to achieve 18.2 kms/litre, depending on driving style.
The Vento ALLSTAR, priced from RM78,888 follows the same theme as the Polo ALLSTAR, offering additional items to add value and also differentiate it from the standard version. Available in Reflex Silver and Candy White as well, this version comes with an accessories package valued at RM7,000. The items in the package are leather upholstery, aluminium sports pedals a rear spoiler, black sill strips and boot garnish, plus ‘ALLSTAR’ emblems and identifiers.
Unlike the Vento GT, the Vento ALLSTAR has a 1.6-litre MPI engine paired to a 6-speed automatic transmission with Tiptronic functionality to allow manual gear selection but in a sequential manner. This engine produces 105 ps/153 Nm and is claimed to enable the Vento to go up to 15.4 kms per litre.
As an added bonus the Vento ALLSTAR will come with a new My VW Drive app which provides the driver with useful information on the running of the car. Information such as driving style and fuel consumption tracks are among the features and with insights into the car’s performance, the driver will be able to optimise motoring for fuel-saving. Additionally, drivers can obtain immediate help from Mondial Roadside Assistance if they have an emergency.
The current Beetle generation has been in Malaysia a while but like its iconic predecessor, it continues to have a following that does not expect the usual change of design. Nevertheless, even an iconic model needs some refreshing periodically and for 2017, VPCM has updated the Beetle with additional features and offers it in two versions – Design and Sport. They are priced from RM136,888 and RM147,888, respectively.
Updates include a 2-zone Climatronic air-conditioning system, composition media with touchscreen display and App Connect, leather trim ‘Vienna’ seat upholstery, front seat lumbar support, bi-xenon headlights and LED daytime running lights. Under the bonnet is the same 1.2-litre unit as that in the Vento GT, with a similar output of 105 ps/175 Nm, and also a 7-speed DSG unit.
Being the sort of car it is, the colours available are cheerful – Pure White, Tornado Red, Blue Silk, Dark Bronze, Habanero Orange and White Silver. The model comes from the global Beetle hub at Volkswagen’s factory in Mexico.
VPCM has also announced a Hari Raya promotion for purchasers of the Vento and Passat. Besides ‘duit raya’ of RM11,000 and RM15,000, respectively, every purchaser will also get a 5-year free scheduled maintenance package as well as RM500 of petrol.
