Volkswagen models have been displayed at the KL International Motor Show (KLIMS) over the years but this year at KLIMS13, it is the first time ever that the German carmaker is officially participating, and it is doing so in a big way. In fact, Volkswagen Group Malaysia (VGM) has taken the largest amount of floor area (1,100 sq. metres) in Hall 2 to present virtually its entire range of models offered in Malaysia.

The layout of the stand would be familiar to those who have visited Volkswagen stands at motorshows in China and Europe with its clean white environment. Advocating awareness on fuel efficiency and sustainability, the German carmaker is also continuing its efforts in reminding Malaysians to “Think Blue.” and adopt an environmentally-sustainable behaviour. As such, a corner of the stand is dedicated to “Think Blue”, where Volkswagen’s ambassadors will share fuel-saving tips to assist people in improving their driving habits by helping them develop awareness on fuel efficiency and reduction of carbon dioxide emissions from exhaust pipes.

“KLIMS 2013 is a significant exhibition for us as we have brought to the Malaysian people some very interesting models that showcase the best of German engineering. Through our range of vehicles, we aspire to give car enthusiasts, Volkswagen lovers, and the people a fun time experiencing the quality and diversity of our brand and the sophistication of the technologies we offer,” said Dr Zeno Kerschbaumer, MD of Volkswagen Group Malaysia.

The carmaker is using the motorshow to introduce its third locally-assembled model, the Polo hatchback, which joins the other two models (assembled at the DRM-HICOM complex in Pahang) which are the Polo Sedan and Passat. Like the sedan, the Polo hatchback also has a 16-valve 1.6-litre 105-ps/153 Nm engine with a 6-speed automatic tiptronic transmission.

“Our third locally-assembled model is an expansion of our Polo family to reach the most important segment in the local automotive market. With its sporty and dynamic design, the new Polo 1.6 hatchback is targeted at younger audience or the young-at-heart customers,” said Dr. Kerschbaumer.

The price of the Polo hatchback is not available yet as it will only go on sale in early 2014. The price of the sedan dropped to RM85,888 in locally-assembled form so chances are, the hatchback variant will also be at the same level, given that the specifications and equipment are similar and it also has four doors (plus a rear hatch, of course).

Other highlights of the stand are a cutaway model of the Golf where visitors can see ‘under the skin’ and find out what makes it an award-winner – like its predecessors. There’s also a Beetle Fender edition, a unique version of the iconic model that is now in its third generation.

The Fender version, finished in a pearl black colour, is equipped with sound system designed by Fender – a legend in the music business. It comes with eight speakers, a subwoofer, and a 400W amplifier to turn every drive into a concert. The interior too has its own unique flavour with the sunburst design of the iconic Fender Stratocaster guitar. This is on the dashboard where the middle area is dark and slowly lightens towards the sides.

If you can’t visit the motorshow, you can still get information on the models at www.volkswagen.com.my, and for test-drives of most models, you can contact Wearnes VW or any authorised dealer in Peninsular as well as East Malaysia (locations available on the Volkswagen website).
