3 years after being introduced in Malaysia, the third generation of the Tucson receives an update in both the exterior and interior appearance to keep it fresh for the second half of its product cycle. The cosmetic changes incorporate the signature elements of the Hyundai cascading grille while new surfacing is applied at the rear to create shadowy, dramatic impressions that represent the Hyundai DNA.
The two variants – 1.6 Turbo and 2.0 Elegance (shown above) – are differentiated by the former having a chrome garnish grille, chrome-coated door handles with pocket lighting as well as LED headlights with positioning lamps and Low Beam Assist-Static Lights. The Elegance variant comes with a metallic silver grille but, surprisingly, has only halogen bulbs in the headlights.
The dashboard gets Hyundai’s latest 7-inch floating display which replaces the screen that was set into the middle of the dashboard. The new display is like a tablet sitting on top of the dashboard but is not too tall so it does not obstruct the forward view. The infotainment system comes with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, allowing smartphone apps to be mirrored and accessed via the display screen.
With the new dashboard design comes a new front panel air-conditioner vent design that runs horizontally across the middle, replacing the vertical vents that were on the side of the display screen. The leather upholstery also has a new design to highlight the updated model.
Other features in the Tucson 1.6 Turbo include a smart tailgate system, Electronic Parking Brake, Electrochromic Rearview Mirror, 8-way power seat for the driver with 2-way lumbar support, and a 4.2-inch TFT LCD Super Vision display in the instrument panel.
Under the bonnet, the same powertrains are used as before. The 1.6 Turbo has the younger the T-GDI engine that produces 177 ps/265 Nm while the 2.0 Elegance uses the Nu MPi engine that produces 155 ps/192 Nm.
Excluding insurance, the 2.0 Elegance and 1.6 Turbo are priced at RM123,888 and RM143,888, respectively, for private registration in Peninsular Malaysia. All new units come with a warranty period of 5 years or 300,000 kms (whichever comes first after original registration) and owners will also enjoy free scheduled servicing for the first 3 years or a maximum mileage of 50,000 kms.
