Over the past year, SOCAR Malaysia, the car-sharing start-up from Korea, has been offering transportation by bringing in a new era of multiflex mobility. Recently, it reached a milestone in its young history when its fleet reached 1,000 vehicles with more than 15 models for members to choose from.

From the Klang Valley and Johor Bahru, SOCAR has now expanded to over 500 zone locations with expansion in the northern region.

Growing membership
Since its inception in Malaysia – the Korean company’s first overseas expansion effort – SOCAR has focused on offering accessibility and convenience to Malaysians who want to enjoy the benefits of car-sharing. According to Leon Foong, the Chief Operating Officer of SOCAR Malaysia, the company has successfully achieved this objective and over the last year, there has been a growth of 20 times in terms of members on SOCAR’s platform. In 2018 alone, the company facilitated more than a million car-sharing hours.

“In 2018, we saw the adoption and growth of car-sharing in Malaysia. This year, we are looking towards a rapid expansion as we would like to extend the multiflex lifestyle to more people in the country. We want to provide the public with an affordable and flexible option for a car or a second car if they already own a car, hence we have invested in more car models to suit different preferences and needs,” Mr. Foong said.

“In addition, we have started off the year by expanding to Penang with more cities in the pipeline in order to increase our accessibility and offer greater convenience to Malaysians who want an alternative to car ownership,” he said, adding that the nationwide fleet will grow to over 2,500 vehicles by the end of 2019.
