The Cayenne has been a success for Porsche with more than 150,000 sold since production began in 2002. The all-terrain sportscar ? Porsche tries to dissuade people from considering it ?just another SUV? – has set many benchmarks for the segment and as with any successful model, coming out with a succeeding generation has not been easy.

But Porsche isn?t like some companies that will keep the same model in production for over 20 years because its competitors are constantly developing and introducing new products. So a second generation has been developed which is expected to carry on the momentum of its predecessor with greater efficiency. What is certain is that the new Cayenne, recently launched in Malaysia, will remain in the forefront of automotive technology.

The new Porsche Cayenne comes with enhancements such as Direct Fuel Injection (DFI) to provide more power but with lower fuel consumption. The new Cayenne models have increased engine capacities (V6 up from 3.2 litres to 3.6 litres; S and Turbo up from 4.5 litres to 4.8 litres), more power (V6 up from 250 bhp to 290 bhp; S up from 340 bhp to 385 bhp; Turbo up from 450 bhp to 500 bhp) and yet demands for fuel are less than before.

To keep sportscar fans happy, the new Cayennes also drive more like sportscars, thanks largely to the new optional Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control (PDCC) and standard ?Sport? button found in all models. The PDCC limits body roll in bends for greater cornering stability at high speeds. The ?Sport? button allows for a more sporting and dynamic drive for models equipped with automatic transmission, air suspension and Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM).

The most obvious change is to the exterior of the new Cayenne is a more dynamic and distinctive front view due to the new headlight design, re-designed front air inlets, re-positioned fog lights and more contoured front wings. At the rear, the new LED taillights add to the enhanced visual appeal together with a redesigned bumper with a diffuser appearance in the lower apron.

The roofline is also lengthened with clever use of a new rear spoiler. All these styling enhancements not only serve to give the new Cayenne a distinctive arresting visual appearance but also bring in greater aerodynamic efficiency.
