If you are interested in owning an electric car today, there are limited choices available as the trend has not started here yet as few companies offer such cars. However, one of the companies offering electric cars is TC Euro Cars (TCEC), the sole franchise holder for Renault cars in Malaysia. They have 3 brand new units of the Renault ZOE hatchback which is 100% electrically-powered and the cars come with an attractive rebate of RM18,000 each plus free ChargEV membership for 3 years. The latter allows owners to recharge their ZOE at any authorised public charging stations (currently has more than 150 stations nationwide).

The ZOE currently retails at RM145,888 (excluding insurance) so the rebate will drop the price to RM127,888. A 3.6-kWh Delta wall-mounted charger is included with the purchase and this can be installed at the home or office.

“The global movement towards 100% electric vehicles is only going to grow amid mounting concerns about sustainability, environmental protection and finite fossil fuel resources. To embrace this movement, we believe that environmental-friendly Malaysians will value and take advantage of this exclusive offer to own the Renault ZOE and be part of the change in creating a more eco-friendly world,” said Kuan Kim Luen, CEO of TC Euro Cars.

The ZOE was originally designed as an electric car, not adapted from an existing petrol-engined model. Thus, its engineering is optimised for this type of car which offers a number of advantages. However, unlike some electric cars, the ZOE still has contemporary looks as a compact 5-door hatchback.

On the inside, there’s a modern ‘eco’ character with a bright colour scheme evocative of purity. The dashboard moulding has been designed to resemble the blade of a wind turbine.

The ZOE comes standard with a 7-inch Renault R-Link touchscreen display with USB connectivity and hands-free Bluetooth kit, a keyless entry system with walkaway lock, and a 12V power socket so you can recharge your phone or keep your GPS route navigation unit powered. Cruise control with a speed-limiter is also present, along with automatic climate control, rain-sensing windscreen wipers and automatic headlights.

Although there is battery pack present, it is installed under the middle of the car. So there is enough storage space available with 338 litres of boot space which can be expanded to 1,225 litres with the rear backrest folded.

Being a European product, the ZOE has a comprehensive set of safety features – dual front airbags as well as head-and-chest side airbags for driver and passenger, ABS with EBD, ESC and ASR, height-adjustable 3-point front seatbelts with pretensioners, and ISOFIX child seat anchors on the outer rear seats and front passenger seat.

Like a typical electric car, the ZOE has zippy acceleration. The electric motor generates the equivalent of 88 ps with maximum torque of 220 Nm that is available from 250 rpm (that’s not a misprint!). Powered by a 22-kWh lithium-ion battery, charging the battery pack to full will take 4 – 9 hours, depending on whether fast or regular charging is used. With a full battery pack, the ZOE has a claimed range of 210 kms although, like a car with an internal combustion engine, it depends on how you drive. Higher speeds will obviously draw energy at a faster rate, reducing the range.
