Later this year, UMW Toyota Motor (UMWT) will begin importing the all-new Toyota Supra as well as launch the latest Yaris. Launch dates have not been revealed although it is likely that they will be in showrooms during the second half of the year (although the Yaris might be earlier).
The all-new Supra had its global debut in Detroit last month, bringing back the legendary sportscar to the Toyota range. Designated ‘A90’ as a continuation of the model codes of previous generations, it is the fifth generation of the model and the first global Toyota GAZOO Racing model. It has been developed in collaboration with BMW which has its own version as the new Z4.
Prices are not known yet but UMWT officials said that they will bring in both the 3-litre and 2-litre variants. The Supra will be imported from the Magna Steyr factory in Austria which will be the global production hub for both the Toyota and BMW sportscars.
As for the Yaris, this will be the latest generation which has been on sale in Thailand and Indonesia for some time now. The model is not a new name in Malaysia as UMWT did offer it some time back.
However, while it was originally conceived as an entry-level model for the European markets, it proved to be rather expensive not only in Malaysia but also in other ASEAN countries and was eventually withdrawn.
With the latest version, Toyota has engineered the car to an ‘ASEAN cost base’ and the Malaysian version will be assembled at the new plant in Bukit Raja, Selangor. At present, the latest Vios is assembled there.
Pricing is not known at this time but it may be treated as an alternative to the Vios sedan for those who prefer a hatchback so the pricing might not be significantly different.
