Just eight months after its world premier in Amsterdam, the highly anticipated fourth-generation W177 Mercedes-Benz A-Class has made its official debut in Malaysia last night with two model variants, the A 200 Progressive Line and A 250 AMG Line boasting the company’s latest MBUX intelligent multimedia system, new drivetrains, a new exterior design and many other new features.
The main highlight with the new A-Class is the Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX), which Stuttgart’s executive compact hatchback is the first model to feature the intelligent system. MBUX has the ability to learn thanks to artificial intelligence, which the system recognizes and understands every sentence from the driver in the infotainment functions and vehicle operations and can be individualized and adapts to suit each user.
“The new Mercedes-Benz A-Class marks a new episode on a revolutionary journey into the digital era of the automobile. This gadget-like car redefines functionalities with an intuitive approach and underlining the lifestyle element making it the ultimate must-have item,” said Mark Raine, Vice President, Sales and Marketing, Mercedes-Benz Malaysia.
Indeed, the touchscreen is part of the MBUX touch-control concept which consists of the touchscreen, touchpad on the centre console and touch buttons on the steering wheel. What makes this system very intuitive is its intelligent voice control with natural language comprehension which can be activated by the words, “Hey Mercedes”. This intelligent language assistant supports numerous infotainment functions such as destination input, phone call, music selection, as well as climate control and lighting, keeping hands clear from the controls while driving.
The other thing that is hard to ignore is the new A-Class’ new exterior design based on the next step in Mercedes-Benz’s Sensual Purity philosophy. Its much cleaner, sharper with a much larger surface area than the outgoing W176 model. Flanking the diamond radiator grille are the Adaptive Highbeam LED headlamps which highlights any road hazards more clearly, without blinding any oncoming traffic automatically.
At launch, the new A-Class is available in two trim levels: the A 200 Progressive Line and A 250 AMG Line. The former is identifiable with the Progressive Line exterior and 18-inch 5 twin spoke alloy wheels, while the latter is equipped with the AMG Line exterior and 18-inch 5 spoke AMG alloy wheels.
More radical still is its interior design; both, the Mercedes-Benz A 200 and A 250 also come with two 10.25-inch high-resolution media touchscreen and all-digital instrument display which can be switched to different styles from “Classic”, “Understated” or “Sport” mode complementing the turbine-look air-vents and leather multifunction sports steering wheel. Smooth transitions between the instrument panel, centre console and door trims create the pleasant wrap-around design, which is a whole lot less cluttered and more compartmentalised than before.
Once a feature enjoyed in the E-Class, the new A-Class now comes with 64 colours for the ambient lighting. Besides the increase in colour variety, the ambient lighting colours are composed into ten colour worlds, allowing an avant-garde lighting display with spectacular colour changes. The colour worlds can be matched to the different styles of the widescreen display when required.
The A 200 Progressive Line is also equipped with a compact 1.3-litre inline turbocharged 4-cylinder petrol engine rated at 163 hp at 5,500 rpm and 250 Nm of torque at 1,620 – 4,000 rpm, mated with the 7G-DCT dual-clutch automatic transmission.
The A 250 AMG Line, is equipped with a 2.0-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder petrol engine rated at 224 hp 5,500 rpm and 350 Nm at 1,800 – 4,000 rpm, mated to the same 7G-DCT dual-clutch automatic transmission. Both cars are also equipped with the four Dynamic Select transmission modes “Eco”, “Comfort”, “Sport” and “Individual”.
The A 200 Progressive Line is priced at RM227,888 and the A 250 AMG Line is priced at RM263,888. Both cars can be financed under Mercedes-Benz Financial’s Agility Financing for 3 years.
If there is a need to further personalise your A-Class, Mercedes-Benz Malaysia also offers customers customisation options for the new luxury compact. The Aftersales department offers owners the A-Class Aero Package which includes a front lip spoiler, side skirt, B-Pillar garnish, wing mirror housing cover, and a rear spoiler.
“The new Mercedes-Benz A-Class is a revolution, offering a level of quality and luxury never seen in this class before. It will be the forerunner of the compact car range, rejuvenating our brand as the most desirable luxury lifestyle brand. This progressive A-Class reinterprates our definition of Modern Luxury with the Mercedes-Benz User Experience which is activated by the command, “Hey Mercedes”,” concluded Mark.
