Where it has previously rebadged a Suzuki model to have a compact MPV in its line-up for the Indonesian market, Mitsubishi Motors (MMC) will soon have its own model. The model, referred to as the XM1 Concept, is being previewed at the GAIKINDO Indonesia International Auto Show 2016 this week and is said to ‘fuse the toughness of an SUV with the versatility of an MPV’.
The XM Concept has a wide body and optimized layout to provide generous interior space that allows seven occupants to relax in comfort. The front end incorporates Mitsubishi Motors’ Dynamic Shield front design concept, used for the latest models, that gives visual expression to its function of protecting occupants and the vehicle.
The SUV-like functionality along with SUV-like styling features deeply flared front and rear fenders that express stability and generous ground clearance, the latter essential for Indonesian motoring conditions. It also has an underbody protector to prevent stones from damaging the underside of the vehicle.
MMC has confirmed that a small crossover MPV adopting features of the XM Concept will be produced from October 2017 at a new factory located in West Java Province. The factory is presently under construction and will begin operations in about a year’s time.
Being made in Indonesia means it can be imported to Malaysia with no import duty imposed as the AFTA agreement has such a provision. However, while Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia does need more breadth to its line-up for the local market, the compact MPV segment may become crowded by the time the new Mitsubishi MPV is available.
