Over 5,500 units of Proton’s first SUV, the X70, are already on the road around Malaysia. Owners of nine of those units have decided to see what their vehicles are capable of and have embarked on a long-distance drive. And it’s not just around Malaysia but beyond its borders – all the way to China by road.

33 days, 13,000 kms
The owners came up with the idea themselves and planned the 33-day overland trip – named the ‘Malaysia – China Amazing Trip’ – which will pass through 4 countries, 13 cities and put some 13,000 kms more mileage on their SUVs. They will end their journey at Hangzhou in China, the most populous city of Zhejiang Province which is also home to Proton’s joint-venture partner, Geely.

They will visit the Geely Experience Centre and learn more about how the carmaker transformed into one of the fastest growing automotive companies as well as getting a chance to view their newest models (some of which will serve as the basis for future Proton models).

Proton, which is offering support, has arranged with its dealers and service centres along the route to welcome the participants and provide any assistance if needed. After completing their visit to Hangzhou, the participants will make their way home via a different route, with the final destination being the Proton Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Subang Jaya, Selangor, where the company’s head office is situated.

Showcasing the X70 overseas
Speaking during the flag-off ceremony from the Proton CoE, Dato’ Radzaif Mohamed, Deputy CEO of Proton, said: “While this is a private initiative, Proton is happy to offer its support as a sign of appreciation to its customers. The Proton X70 has been very well received by Malaysians and we hope that by showing regional car buyers its capabilities, we will be laying the groundwork for future export sales success.”

He added that the trip presents an opportunity to showcase the Proton SUV in overseas markets, especially those in ASEAN countries, which are key to future sales growth. “It will also prove the SUV is capable of performing in a number of different environments and road conditions as it travels from Malaysia to China,” he said.
