In 2002, a group of motoring journalists established Malaysia’s first Car of the Year Awards which would be a much-awaited event at the end of each year. This year, the event has been renamed the Malaysia Car of the Year Awards and has the involvement of the Malaysia Automotive Institute (MAI).
At a gala dinner hosted by the MAI tonight and attended by the Minister of International Trade and Industry, Dato’ Sri Mustapa Mohamed, the winners of the inaugural Malaysia Car of the Year 2016 Awards were announced with the 10th generation Honda Civic being the overall winner.
The overall Malaysia Car of the Year Award was chosen from the winners of 11 categories of awards by the judging panel which consisted of 7 members. 6 are full-time motoring journalists while the seventh is a business journalist. Among the motoring journalists was Chips Yap from Motor Trader.
The winners of each category were chosen after careful deliberation by the panel throughout the 12-month competition period which ended on October 31 this year. The objective of categorisation was two-fold: to accurately reflect the proliferation of new types of models and choices in the marketplace for the buyer, and to keep the competition keen.
National brands featured heavily in notable categories. The Perodua Bezza 1.3 Advance received the highest number of votes in an online poll, to win the People’s Choice of 2016 category. The Proton Saga, Proton Persona and Perodua also received awards in the Special Mention category, in honour of their value for money, fuel efficiency improvement as well as local in-house design capabilities.
Honda Malaysia’s former CEO & Managing Director, Yoichiro Ueno, was also named as the Automotive Man of the Year 2016. Mr. Ueno was picked by the judging panel for driving the Honda brand to compete amongst traditional leaders in the Malaysian market. Under his leadership, the company moved the brand up to overall No. 2 spot in unit sales this year.
