While the European carmakers were slow to get on the ‘SUV bandwagon’, they have been active in the MPV segment for a long time, offering appealing and functional models of various sizes. One of the current examples is the Citroen C4 Spacetourer imported and distributed by Naza Euro Motors, the official distributor of the Citroën brand in Malaysia. Priced from under RM150,000 (without insurance), this 7-seater MPV should prove to be an idea family transporter.

“Designed with Space, Versatility and Innovation in mind, the Citroen Grand C4 Spacetourer is a feature-packed 7-seater MPV that turns heads on the road. As a worthy successor of the Grand C4 Picasso, the Grand C4 Spacetourer is bound to appeal to families looking for an MPV with style, versatility and innovation. The New Grand C4 Spacetourer offers a multitude of practical features, along with its intuitive safety and performance technologies will be well received by the Malaysian public,” said Dato’ Samson Anand George, Group CEO, Automotive Group, Naza Corporation Holdings Sdn Bhd.

The exterior of the Grand C4 Spacetourer has the styling flair which the French carmaker has been noted for. The sweeping windscreen and low bonnet slope to the familiar Chevron emblem in the middle of a minimalist grille. The slim headlight units on either end contain directional bi-xenon bulbs with integral daytime running lights that provide a visual ‘signature’ for the model.

Inside the spacious cabin, the Grand C4 Spacetourer has a premium trim combination that Citroen calls the ‘Hype Grey ambience’. The dashboard includes a colour display that, at 12 inches wide, offers a panoramic view. Inset in a shroud to minimise reflections, it is the largest display panel in the MPV segment and is complemented by a 7-inch touchscreen in the middle of the dashboard.

Standard connectivity includes Android Auto, Apple Carplay and Mirrorlink with a USB port as well. This means that most smartphones can interface with the infotainment system which will replicate the apps and allow access to them using the touchscreen. For those who rely on Waze or Google Maps to get around, now you can get the directions and maps shown on a larger screen.

Other convenience features include an automatic electric parking brake which is almost effortless to operate, electrically-assisted power steering, a 12V socket to power personal devices or a dashcam, and aircraft-style tables with LED illumination for the rear occupants.

Versatility is often a strong point in MPVs and the Grand C4 Spacetourer is no exception. There are useful storage compartments around the cabin, including in the floor and the boot volume can be expanded when needed by folding the second and third row seats.

A new feature is the motorized tailgate which not only opens and closes by itself but also does so without you having to use your hands. A sensor under the rear bumper will detect a foot being positioned underneath and open the door. This is very useful when you are carrying items in both hands and cannot press a button or pull on a handle.

Riding on the Efficient Modular Platform 2 (EMP2), the Grand C4 Spacetourer incorporates useful technologies aimed at guaranteeing a high level of safety as well as everyday comfort while offering dynamism and efficiency. It is powered by a 1.6-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder engine with an output of 167 ps/240 Nm, peak torque being available from as low as 1,400 rpm. This ensures strong acceleration for moving off as well as overtaking. With an efficient 6-speed automatic transmission, fuel consumption is claimed to be almost 15 kms per litre.

Being a vehicle that carries many people, the Grand C4 Spacetourer has a high level of protection for the occupants and also many driver assistance systems to help the driver avoid hazardous situations. These include an Active Safety Brake, Speed Limit Recognition and Driver Attention Alert.

The Active Safety Brake works at speeds of 30 km/h and will automatically stop the car if the driver does not act in time when a collision is likely. Speed Limit Recognition helps the driver comply with the legal speed and reduces the risk of having an accident on the road as it recognizes speed limit signs and gives this information to the driver via the instrument panel. Driver Attention Alert is a safety system that can detect when the driver might be drowsy through monitoring the way the vehicle is being driven. It also assists the driver to stay alert using sensors on the steering wheel.

Four body colours are available to choose from and for a limited time, each new unit will come with free scheduled service for the first 3 years (terms and conditions apply) as well a 5-year (or maximum of 120,000 kms) warranty. In the event that the owner requires assistance while motoring, there is a complimentary 24-hour Roadside Assistance service and also access to the exclusive Sky Lounge at Subang Skypark in Selangor.
