Relating to the announcement by UMW Toyota Motor (UMWT) last year that it would transfer the majority of its own retail outlets to independent dealers, two of the outlets in Penang island have been taken over by a foreign partner. The partner is Netz Toyota Tama Co. Ltd. which has been associated with Toyota in Japan for almost 60 years. It has 29 outlets throughout Tokyo operating in the Toyota Netz sales channel which focuses on younger buyers. It also has another 33 outlets operating the Corolla sales channel in the western part of Tokyo.
“A year ago, we announced that our retail operations would be transferred to dealers to increase the focus on operations and customer care, while UMW Toyota Motor would concentrate on high value-added activities such as product development, marketing and dealer network support. As of today, the majority of our existing branches have been transferred,” said Ravindran K., President of UMW Toyota Motor.
With this partnership, S&D Tama Malaysia, the locally incorporated arm of Netz Toyota Tama Co Ltd will be responsible for providing sales and service to customers in the northern region of Peninsular Malaysia. The combined annual sales volume of the two outlets is around 2,000 units, accounting for a large number of Toyota vehicles sold in the northern region. As the customer base has continued to grow, the aftersales side of the business has been servicing up to 50,000 units a year.
Commenting on the new partnership, Akio Takeyama, Deputy Chairman of UMW Toyota Motor said: “We are honoured and welcome S&D Tama Malaysia Sdn. Bhd. to the Toyota network in Malaysia. They bring with them nearly 60 years of experience in serving Toyota customers and are well known as a top dealer for customer satisfaction in Japan. It is our expectation to S&D Tama to be able to delight our Malaysian customers.”
“Since our establishment in 1960, our company in Japan has always strived to serve our customers and provide convenience for people. We believe that the Toyota business in the Malaysian market has a bright future and we would like to contribute to the growth of the business,” said Katsuhiko Tamura, President of S&D Tama Malaysia.
“We want to thank UMW Toyota Motor for giving us the opportunity to be involved in their retail operations. We would like to give assurance that we are fully committed to look after their existing and future customers in the best possible way,” Mr. Tamura added.
The two outlets managed by S&D Tama Malaysia are located at Jalan Jelutong on Penang island and the Prai Industrial Estate on the mainland. Both are 3S outlets which means they offer a full range of sales and aftersales services, including Body & Paint facilities to repair damaged vehicles.
Besides S&D Tama, UMWT also has another Japanese partner in the Toyota dealer network which operates as UMW Toyotsu Motors. It is a joint venture between Toyota Tsusho Corporation Japan, UMW Corporation and Toyota Tsusho (M) Sdn Bhd. Established in 2006, UMW Toyotsu Motors was the first authorised Toyota dealer in Malaysia to have a 3S (sales, service and spare parts) facility which is located in Shah Alam, Selangor.
