Hyundai Motor has revealed further details of its Toyota Prius challenger to be called the IONIQ . The new model will make its debut in Korea later this month and in Geneva and New York during the first quarter of the year.
Unlike the Prius, however, the IONIQ is available not only with a hybrid powertrain. It can also be ordered (depending on the market) with a plug-in hybrid system or even a fully-electric powertrain. It is the first-ever car to offer a choice of three powertrain options in the same body type.
Actual pictures of the new model have not been released but Hyundai is now giving a preview with some interior and exterior renderings. The exterior features a distinguished, cutting-edge aerodynamic design. Simple yet carefully wrought contours enhance the IONIQ’s coupe-like silhouette and minimize wind resistance by assisting the efficient management of airflow.
At the front of the car, familiar Hyundai design themes are evident – notably the signature hexagonal grille – as striking blue and white colours blend with the headlights to visually depict the IONIQ as an eco-friendly car.
The uncluttered design theme continues inside as its futuristic perspective draws on the car’s hybrid credentials. The efficient use of interior space provides a sleek and light feel, which continues through the logical layout of control functions. Simple and stylish surfaces make use of eco-friendly materials to convey a futuristic yet warm cabin ambience that will meet the needs of those wishing to reduce the impact their motoring has on the environment while enjoying outstanding fuel efficiency, performance and handling.
As part of Hyundai Motor’s ambition to chart the direction of future mobility, while enhancing the lives of its customers, the IONIQ responds to rapidly changing customer lifestyles by breaking the mold for hybrid vehicles. The IONIQ combines class-leading fuel efficiency with a fun, responsive drive and attractive design, a unique mix not yet achieved by a hybrid vehicle.
“Hyundai Motor has a heritage of building innovative, fuel-efficient vehicles, so we are proud to advance our eco-friendly car line-up with the introduction of IONIQ. Our vision for future mobility focuses on choice, with a variety of powertrain options to suit customers’ varied lifestyles, without compromising on design or driving enjoyment. IONIQ embodies Hyundai Motor’s vision to shift the automotive paradigm and future mobility; IONIQ is the fruit of our efforts to become the leader in the global green car market,” said Woong-Chul Yang, Head of Hyundai Motor’s R&D Centre.
The new car’s name references elements of its creation. An ion is an electrically-charged atom, linking to the car’s clever combination of electrified powertrains. The second part of the name references the unique offering it brings to the Hyundai range, demonstrating the brand’s environmental commitment and willingness to maximize choice for its customers. Finally, the ‘Q’ is depicted in the car’s logo as a visual breakthrough, acknowledging the fresh new approach of this advanced, low-emission model.
