Hyundai-Sime Darby Motors (HSDM) will launch its first locally-assembled hybrid model – the IONIQ – next month. Orders are now being accepted by HSDM’s branches and authorized dealers nationwide. With an estimated price of RM130,000, it is almost a certainty that the new model has the benefit of EEV (Energy Efficient Vehicle) incentives provided under the National Automotive Policy (NAP).
For the IONIQ, Hyundai Motor developed a unique platform which can be configured for three different powertrains to suit different markets. It can be a fully-electric (EV) powertrain, a plug-in hybrid (PHEV), or a hybrid (HEV). For the Malaysian market, the HEV configuration has been considered the most suitable.
“The Hyundai IONIQ though a hybrid, promises a pleasurable driving experience. It will not only appeal to eco and fuel-efficiency oriented buyers but also car buyers who are looking for a car with advanced technologies, great performance and a stylish design,” said HSDM Managing Director Lau Yit Mun.
The eco-friendly sedan which draws on Hyundai Motor’s Blue Drive Technology has features which enhance efficiency and provide strong performance. It is by a 1.6-litre GDI 4-cylinder Kappa petrol engine which works with a 32kW/44 ps electric motor. The combined system output is 141 ps/256 Nm which flows to the front wheels through a 6-speed dual-clutch transmission.
Electric energy to power the motor is stored in a lithium-ion polymer battery pack which is recharged as the car moves along. The battery pack is said to be 23-25% more efficient than a conventional nickel-metal-hydride battery. This provides lower memory sensitivity, excellent charge/discharge efficiency and high output.
Standard features in the IONIQ include a touchscreen Audio Visual Navigator, a dynamic reverse camera, Vehicle Stability Management and 7 airbags. The bodyshell is composed of 53.5% advanced-high-strength steel and lightweight aluminium for low weight but high rigidity.
Before the official launch, the new model will be on display at the Malaysia Autoshow 2016 which will be held at the Mines International Exhibition and Convention Centre (MIECC) from November 10 -13, 2016.
