Ford has been a regular participant at the KL International Motorshow (KLIMS) since the first one was held in the 1970s. This year, at KLIMS13, it is displaying a wide range of different models, many of which can be purchased in Malaysia while a few are a preview of what’s coming in 2014.
The two stars at the Ford booth are the EcoSport, a compact SUV, and the Fiesta EcoBoost, which has a small engine that produces power and torque comparable to bigger engines. Both these models will go on sale next year.
The EcoSport brings Ford into a new market segment with its compact size. It has a 1.5-litre Ti-VCT engine and rides on a platform adapted from that of the Fiesta. So while it has SUV looks and ground clearance, it would also have comfort levels that are comparable to those of a passenger car.
The Fiesta EcoBoost will give buyers a second choice in the new Fiesta range. Its turbocharged direct-injection engine with EcoBoost technology produces 125 ps/170 Nm from a 1-litre displacement – comparable to a conventional 1.6-litre engine – but is claimed to be able to go 23.3 kms on a litre of fuel. Incidentally, the engine was picked as the International Engine of the Year for both 2012 and 2013.
Ford’s rich heritage is also featured with a 1928 Model A pick-up, which is probably the ‘grandfather’ of today’s Ford pick-ups like the Ranger and F-Series.
For the duration of motorshow, bookings will be accepted for the EcoSport and Fiesta EcoBoost, and those who make bookings for any new Ford vehicle at the motorshow will receive a special gift (while stocks last). There will also be contests daily with prizes for the lucky winners and if you don’t win something, you can still buy Ford merchandise at the booth.
