Europe’s 2017 Car of the Year – the all-new Peugeot 3008 – is now available in Malaysia. Launched today in two variants, the new SUV model is priced at RM142,888 for the Active Variant and RM155,888 for the Allure variant, both prices without insurance premiums.
“As the most innovatively modern SUV in its class, the All-New 3008 SUV is the new milestone in its segment of the market. Built on the principles of design, advanced technology and function, the All-New 3008 SUV is adorned with a powerful and refined style that provides convenient versatility that is unrivalled in its segment,” said Dato’ Samson Anand George, Group Chief Executive Officer, Automotive Group, Naza Corporation Holdings Sdn Bhd.
“We are looking at a sales volume of 1,800 units this year and this new SUV has a target of 400 units which contributes 22% to that overall target,” he said, adding that the 3008 will be targeted at discerning customers between the ages of 30 to 45, especially those who are expecting differentiation in a vehicle with superior design, premium features and uncompromising safety standards.
This is only the second generation of the 3008 which was first went on sale in 2009. With the new generation, the wheelbase has been stretched by about 60 mm for a more spacious interior but the body has lengthened by 82 mm although the overall width is virtually the same as before. The platform is similar to the one used for the current 308, ie the EMP2 platform which was developed for models in the PSA Peugeot Citroen Group.
The design of the 3008 has never followed SUV convention, though this is not surprising as French designers are individualistic. Thus their interpretation of a SUV is somewhat different but still incorporating styling elements such as wide protective bands that give the impression of ruggedness, as well as a raised ground clearance. Taking some ideas from the HX1 concept car, there is a dynamic feel to the front end as the upper surface of the bonnet flows into a crease incorporating the door handles and stretching out the line of the vehicle with finesse and style.
Adopting the latest design DNA of the marque, the 3008 is equipped with Advanced Full LED Technology headlights at the front and a sequential Scrolling Indicator in the new opalescent taillights. The 3D ‘claw marks’ provide a visual signature of the brand at night and also in the daytime.
Power comes from a 1.6-litre THP petrol engine with Variable Valve Timing that produces 167 ps/240 Nm of torque, making it one of the most powerful SUVs in its segment. The automatic transmission is a 6-speeder with Tiptronic manual selection and a SPORT mode for those times when there is a need for quicker acceleration. An impressive top speed of 211 km/h is claimed while being able to achieve as much as 14.3 kms per litre.
The independent front suspension uses MacPherson struts and coil springs with integrated with pressurised hydraulic shock absorbers. At the rear, a simple layout using a twist-beam axle locates the wheels, with shock absorbers. This being a SUV, the engineers faced a considerable challenge with the higher ride-height and raised centre of gravity but with their long experience and also the knowledge gained from Peugeot’s rally machines, they have given the 3008 a dynamic drive as well as a comfort ride.
Beyond the considerable developments in its occupant protection (the latest model has a maximum star rating from EuroNCAP), the 3008 comes with a many features and equipment for improved safety. 6 airbags are standard and for Active Safety, the driver gets not just the usual ABS with EBD and Brake Assist as well as Anti-Skid Regulation but also an Electronic Stability Program (ESP) to prevent the car from spinning out of control in a corner.
Additional systems which may be useful if the owner ventures off-road are Hill Start Assist, Advanced Grip Control and Hill Assist Descent Control (HADC). Advanced Grip Control is an enhanced traction system which offers optimised traction control with five grip levels for different surface conditions. The desired selection is done by a rotating knob (shown on the right) on the console between the front seats and ahead of the handbrake lever.
Also available is the Peugeot Park Assist front and rear sensors to help the driver position the car without hitting anything. Complementing this is a reverse camera with a 180-degree view which is a first in its class.
Moving inside, the cabin features the latest generation of the Peugeot i-Cockpit on a clean dashboard. This award-winning novel concept is technologically cool and yet has a modern chic feeling with clever use of fabric on the dashboard and door panels. This all-digital display is at head height, enabling the driver to take in more of the road ahead while driving and yet able to view the information on the display. Incidentally, like the meters in the 308, the pointers for the tachometer and speedometer sweep towards the centre. So while the speedometer pointer sweeps in a clockwise direction as normal, the pointer for the tachometer goes anti-clockwise! The steering wheel is more compact and has been redesigned with two flats to make it easier to grip and to afford the driver maximum visibility and legroom.
Other features include USB and Bluetooth connectivity, Apple Carplay and Android Auto for connecting smartphones, auto electric parking brake, automatic dual zone air-conditioning, 6-speaker audio system with 3D Arkamys sound staging system, premium luxury leather seats, driver seat lumbar and height adjustment and flexible 8-way electric driver seat with memory settings.
With the optimised architecture of the EMP2 platform, interior cabin space is better and evident in the boot volume which is improved over the previous generation’s. Loading luggage into the 590-litre space is easy through not just a large opening but also one of the lowest loading heights in its class. With the rear seats folded, the total storage volume is increased to 1,670 litres with a flat floor.
The new 3008 comes with a 5-year manufacturer’s warranty and the driver has coverage for the entire period since there is no limit on mileage done after registration. Owners also enjoy Nasim’s existing 24-hours Peugeot Assistance service and complimentary access to the lounge at Sky Park Subang before their flight.
