Nicolas Hayek, the original creator of the smart car – probably never imagined his little city car becoming a ‘pocket rocket’. He had come up with the idea which was something like the Swatch watch that his company made – simple, stylish and affordable. But eventually, the little car caught the attention of Brabus, well known for its powerful supercars, and it developed powerful versions of the smart car that certainly qualified as ‘pocket rockets’.
The latest one from the German high-performance tuning specialist is the 125R edition and the number refers to the that fact that there will be only 125 units of the original track racer that are designed for public roads. Each unit is priced at 39,900 euros, equivalent to about RM186,000.
The donor car is the current smart fortwo cabrio, with the 3-cylinder 898 cc turbocharged engine uprated by Brabus engineers to a peak output of 125 ps/200 Nm. This gives a claimed acceleration time from 0 to 100 km/h of 9.2 seconds and though it can go faster, the top speed is electronically limited to 175 km/h.
To achieve the increase, the engineers developed a modified intake system, an even more efficient intercooler, and a recalibrated engine control unit. For further performance optimization and for an especially sporty sound at the touch of a button, the engine is fitted with a stainless-steel Brabus sport exhaust system with actively controlled flaps. To match the 3 cylinders of the engine, this exhaust system features 3 centre-exiting tailpipes.
To be able to keep this performance safely in check at all times, the 125R is equipped with tailor-made aerodynamic-enhancement components, a lowered suspension and high-performance tyres (185/50R16 at the front, 205/40R17 at the rear). The driving dynamics are as superlative as the track car on which it is based.
The special model comes in two colors, glossy black or matte titanium. On the black variant, the bright red bodywork components at the front, sides and rear stand out immediately. On the titanium-colored vehicles, these components have a black finish.
Being made for road use, the 125R comes with an extensive range of equipment. A Brabus black leather interior with precise special quilting and perforation on the seat surfaces, all finished with perfect workmanship in very detail, as well as a host of other exclusive features ensure a special ambience in the cockpit.
