Toyota Boshoku UMW Sdn Bhd (TBU) officially opened its third plant yesterday in Shah Alam, Selangor, in conjunction with the launch of the new 3rd generation Toyota Vios in Malaysia.
This new plant joins two others which were built earlier as part of a joint-venture between Toyota Boshoku Corporation, Japan and UMW Toyota Motor Sdn Bhd in 2006.
TBU focuses on manufacturing and assembling seats, door trims and interior parts which are supplied to Assembly Services Sdn Bhd (ASSB) for the Vios, Hilux, Fortuner, Innova and Hiace. It also produces some parts for Hino commercial vehicles.
The investment for TBU’s third plant was over RM22 million and the project, which started early this year, is part of UMW Toyota Motor’s RM1 billion investment plan for 3 years until 2013.
Speaking at the official opening ceremony of the new plant, Datuk Ismet Suki, UMW Toyota Motor’s President said, “Toyota Boshoku UMW was actually established more than 25 years ago. Previously named Seat Industries (M) Sdn Bhd, TBU plant 1 started its operations at ASSB, assembling seats for Corolla models and later on expanding to seat frame, door trim and headlining assembly for other Toyota models”.
Datuk Ismet also added, that in 2011, TBU invested over RM8 million to develop the second plant. This focuses on the sewing and cutting operations and introduced a new product called the “Package Tray” (the rear speaker board for the locally-assembled Camry).
As would be expected, the Toyota Boshoku group has provided TBU with technical support and modern, high-tech manufacturing processes to ensure high quality as well as efficiency. All operations and processes at the plant follow the Toyota Production System to ensure production of good quality parts to Toyota’s high standards.
“This new plant will be pioneering the introduction of vibration-absorption foam, in order to provide better ride comfort to Toyota customers. TBU is also the first plant in Malaysia to introduce automated non-stop mould carrier changing. It has the seat-forming padding capacity of a total of 118 sets per day which will be for the new Vios,” said Datuk Ismet.
