Although Hyundai has been in India since the mid-1990s, Kia, its affiliate in the same group of Korean companies, has not had a presence. Now however, Kia is about to enter the huge market and at the Auto Expo 2018 event, the carmaker marked its pending debut with the unveiling of the SP Concept. This is the first time that this concept car has been shown and the world premiere in India suggests the importance of the market to Kia in coming years.
The SP Concept provides a glimpse of what’s in store for customers when Kia starts retail sales in India in the second half of 2019. Inspired by Indian heritage and driven by advanced technology, the SP Concept shows how the company’s future products will cater to the changing paradigm of the Indian market in the near future.
The futuristic SUV, with its bold style and Kia’s unique design DNA, is geared to appeal to young Indian consumers who want sophisticated beauty, breakthrough technology and high functionality. The combination of its wide and stable stance, sporty and long bonnet profile and futuristic details should set new standards for compact SUVs in India, the company expects.
The SP Concept’s front mask combines a bold formative design with Kia’s hallmark ‘Tiger nose’ grille and many more futuristic details. The headlamp design has slim graphics and functionality through a top and bottom headlamp connected to a wide front grille. The Daytime Running Lights are high-tech graphics and positioning lamps leading to the inside of the ‘Tiger Nose’ grille help produce differentiated images during the day and night.
“Over the last few years, SUVs have become the vehicle-of-choice among Indian buyers. Combining the comfort and space of a sedan with the ability to tackle all kinds of terrain, we intend to storm the market with an SUV that will set new parameters in motoring. It’s still a concept – so it’s a little bit exaggerated – but the actual production car will be very close to what you see here at Auto Expo 2018,” said Peter Schreyer, Chief Design Officer of Kia Motors Corporation, and the man who created the ‘Tiger Nose’.
Besides the SP Concept, Kia also showcased 16 global models although the ones which will be adapted for the Indian market have not been revealed yet.
