Qualification sessions are being held this weekend for Malaysians to win places in the Land Rover Experience Tour to South America. The sessions have been held at DesaPark City on the outskirts of Kuala Lumpur since Friday and over 320 participants have taken part in the challenges to determine their skills and capabilities.
Besides the timed challenges that require precise steering – using the tiny cameras around the Evoque – the participants were also given an opportunity to experience the capabilities of Land Rover models.
The usefulness of systems such as Terrain Response, Torque Vectoring, Hill Descent Control and Wade Sensing were demonstrated. On a specially designed course in the carpark, the SUVs were driven up and down steep ramps, over uneven blocks, through deep water, down steps and along the side of a sharply-angled ramp.
The event is the first part of a Land Rover regional competition held across the Asia-Pacific region. The participant with the highest score from each country will win a trip for two to the regional final later this month. At this event, to be held in Laos, the participants will go through more challenging conditions in off-road terrain. Competing in teams of two, the finalists will embark on 3 days of driving with emphasis will be placed on vehicle handling on the tight and technical courses. Land Rover culture also promotes teamwork and this aspect will also be observed and considered. Points will be awarded according to speed and accuracy across a range of activities and the top two pairs of finalists will win a spot on the Land Rover Experience Tour Peru 2017.
In Peru, they will drive the all-new Discovery on a 6-day off-road expedition through the Peruvian mountains, jungles and desert. The tour leaves Huancayo and covers about 650 kms over the Peruvian mountains and through the desert to Pisco, Peru.
However, unlike the legendary Camel Trophy events which used Land Rover vehicles, this event is not as extreme and the participants will have more ‘civilised’ conditions during the journey, staying at prepared campsites and local lodges along the route.
Of course, it will still be a once-in-a-lifetime adventure for many as most would never have been in that part of the world before – and might never again travel there too. And even better – Land Rover will cover all the costs!
