One of the advantages of not having a model assembled locally is that new versions can be introduced very quickly after their global launch. There is no need to set up a new assembly line, train workers and get local suppliers for certain parts, all of which can take months.
This is one of the reasons why we are seeing new Fords appearing ever few months in Auto ConneXion showrooms. Most come from either Thailand or the Philippines where Ford has its ASEAN plants and after a quiet year last year as Auto ConneXion reorganised itself to handle the Ford distribution, it?s now quickly updating the Ford range.
The latest offering is another variant of the Ranger pick-up, an entry-level version known as the Ranger XL which is priced at RM72,888 in Peninsular Malaysia and RM76,388 in East Malaysia (prices quoted exclude road tax, insurance and registration fee). It?s obvious that for this price, you won?t get as much as the Ranger XLT but you still get the ‘Ford Built Tough? quality and proven reliability.
The exterior has the same 2009 Ranger looks with the new ‘face? sporting a 3-bar grille, stylish headlamp units and even the fake vents on the body panel behind the front wheel arches. 16-inch alloy rims and front foglights are standard. For a limited period, Auto ConneXion is offering the new Ranger XL with a free bedliner and side-steps. Colours available are Blue, White, Gold, Gray, Black Mica and Silver.
The engine is a turbodiesel like the Duratorq powerplant in the Ranger XLT but its power output is lower at 109 ps with 257 Nm of torque at just 2000 rpm. The only available transmission is a 5-speed manual but you still get High and Low ranges for the 4×4 drivetrain.
Like the other Rangers, the Ranger XL has a car-like cabin with a number of features to make motoring pleasant. For example, the steering column is tilt-adjustable and the door mirrors can be adjusted from inside while the audio system has a CD-player which can play mp3 files as well. The door locking system can be operated without using a key and the engine has an immobilizer incorporated to make it harder to steal the vehicle.
The Ranger XL and other Ranger versions can be viewed at 29 Ford showrooms nationwide. For more information or to ask for a test-drive, visit www.ford.net.my or call Auto ConneXion Voice at 1 800 88 3181.
