It’s finally here ladies and gentlemen, the new midlife refreshed Volkswagen Golf is now open for booking nationwide with four different variants to choose from: the Golf TSI Sportline, R-Line, the most sort after Golf GTI and the hardcore Golf R completes the Malaysian Golf model line-up unveiled by Volkswagen Passenger Cars Malaysia (VPCM) earlier today.
Whichever the variant you fancy, the new Golf comes with new headlamp designs – halogen for the Sportline and LED for the rest – new bumper designs for each trim levels and LED tail lights for all. Asides from all these changes, the facelifted Golf hasn’t been drastically changed, likewise with the interior.
There are new items included like new 8-inch Discover Media with App-Connect in the Sportline, R-Line and GTI. The apex Golf R meanwhile gets the slightly bigger 9.2-inch Discover Pro with gesture control and App-Connect.
Besides the Sportline, which gets fabric seats, the variants above it get Vienna leather seats and the 12.3-inch Active Info Display – similarly featured in the top-of-the-range Tiguan and Passat Highline. The R-Line also gets LED headlights with Static and Dynamic Cornering Lights.
Priced at RM155,990 and RM169,990 respectively, the Golf 1.4 TSI Sportline and R-Line both come with the EA211 1.4-litre TSI engine which makes 148hp and 250Nm of torque. The TSI mills in both models come fitted with the 7-speed direct shift gearbox (DSG), which most of its mechatronic gremlins had long been banished.
Both the Sportline and R-line gets the XDS electronic locking differential, which is linked to the Golf’s sophisticated Electronic Stabilisation Programme (ESP) system.
Volkswagen says that the XDS is designed it to maximise road holding and improve responses, especially when cornering. In moments of fast cornering, XDS gives out exactly the right amount of power and providing traction to the inside wheel resulting in reduced understeer.
Attracting boy racers like bees to nectar is the Golf GTI, which is fitted with the tried and tested EA888 2.0-litre TSI turbocharged engine that makes 227hp and 350Nm of torque beginning at 1,500 and ends at 4,600 rpm. The 2.0-litre turbo mill is mated to the robust 6-speed DSG wet clutch gearbox and XDS+.
The GTI gets perforated Vienna leather seats, LED headlights with dynamic cornering lights, LED taillights with Dynamic Indicators and Adaptive Chassis Control (DCC) with driving mode selection. The new Golf GTI is now priced at RM239,990.
The Bhut Jolokia Volkswagen Golf R comes with a much more powerful EA888 2.0-litre TSI turbocharged engine making 286hp and 380Nm of torque, which is connected to a 7-speed DSG wet clutch transmission. The Golf R comes with 4Motion all-wheel drive and XDS+.
The Golf R comes with the R ‘Vienna’ perforated leather seats, LED headlights with Dynamic Cornering Lights, LED taillights with Dynamic Indicators, progressive steering and Adaptive Chassis Control (DCC) with driving mode selection.
All facelifted Golf models come with Volkswagen Passenger Cars Malaysia’s 5 Year Manufacturers Warranty, 5 Years Roadside Assistance and 3 Years Free Maintenance.
VPCM is also offering Malaysians the golden opportunity to win an all-expense paid trip to the Wörthersee GTI Festival in Austria (do pay special attention Volkswagen fans!). The contest is currently on going and will end on the 27th of March 2018. More details can be found at the Volkswagen Malaysia’s website.
Also, members of the public will have the opportunity to view the new Golf GTI and Golf R in person at the upcoming Volkswagen Tours.
