Local assembly of the BMW X3 xDrive20i has commenced at the BMW Group Malaysia assembly plant in Kulim, Kedah. It is the fourth model assembled at the plant since operations began there in 2008 (having transferred from the AMI plant in Selangor which closed down). The other models are the X1, 3-Series and 5-Series.
The BMW plant is operated in partnership with Inokom Corporation (a subsidiary of Sime Darby Berhad which is BMW’s local business partner) . Both BMW and Inokom are on the same site but operate on separate and independent facilities (including quality inspections) in the facility.
Commenting on the addition of the model to the locally-assembled line-up, Dr. Gerhard Pils, CEO of BMW Group Malaysia said: “The introduction of the new BMW X3 xDrive20i marks the fourth model line we have introduced here at our assembly facilities and further increases BMW Group Malaysia’s investment and commitment in the country. The new locally-assembled units will continue to match the capabilities of their imported counterparts here and will further allow us to optimize our supply to customers throughout the country as well as maximising our ability to increase the total cost of ownership value, waiting time for complete units and spare parts for our customers in the country.”
Dr. Pils added that the X3 has created a unique medium Sports Activity Vehicle segment that integrates form, function and style into one dynamic package. “Since its introduction in March 2011, we have delivered a total of 312 units of the BMW X3 to date. Like the BMW 3-Series, the BMW 5-Series and BMW X1 that are currently assembled at our facilities in Kulim, the new X3 will be a key contributor to our continued success and growth here in Malaysia,” he said.
Similar to its imported counterpart, the locally-assembled X3 will have a similarly high level of equipment and feature BMW’s advanced xDrive system for optimum performance in all driving situations. [Click here to read more about the xDrive advantage]
As part of the BMW EfficientDynamics strategy, the X3 also features optimised aerodynamics, intelligent lightweight construction, Brake Energy Regeneration, Electromechanical Steering, the Auto Start/Stop function as well as the ECO PRO mode in combination with the 8-speed automatic transmission to stretch every litre of fuel.
Priced at RM323,800 (without insurance), the locally-assembled X3 xDrive20i comes with BMW’s extensive service program – BMW Service + Repair Inclusive – which covers the normal wear and tear repairs or replacements as well as maintenance, service and repair of factory components of the vehicle. The service program provides cover for 3 years from original registration date or 60,000 kms, whichever comes first.
