Jaguar Land Rover (Malaysia) has officially begun sales of the new Land Rover Discovery in the Malaysian market today. The fifth-generation model, which has a history going back to the late 1980s, benefits from Land Rover’s strong, safe and light full-size SUV architecture, delivering comfort and adaptability like no other.

Priced from RM729,800 (excluding insurance and roadtax), the new Discovery redefines the large SUV. It also embodies Land Rover’s drive to go ‘Above and Beyond’ with the well-known superior 4×4 capabilities that the brand has always been known for.

While the earliest Discovery had two rows of seats plus small side-folding benches in the cargo area, today’s Discovery has three rows of seating to accommodate up to 7 persons. Stadium-style seating below the stepped roof – which has been a styling feature from the first generation – allows all passengers to have excellent forward visibility.

The new Discovery also offers the driver a raised Command Driving Position, simplified controls and enhanced chassis technology.

Apart from that, it is also equipped with InControl Touch Pro, which provides greater connectivity than ever before including access to a range of apps, satellite navigation as well as vehicle controls through the large 10-inch high-resolution touchscreen display.

The Powered Inner Tailgate is an innovation offered with the new Discovery. This incorporates an additional fold-down section that deploys when the tailgate is opened. This replicates the two-section rear door that was popularised by the Range Rover in earlier years. A button inside the load area can then be used to lower the Powered Inner Tailgate section. The deployed 285-mm long tailgate serves as impromptu seat able to support a maximum load of 300 kgs. It can also serve as a ‘table’ for gear, food or drinks, with the raised tailgate providing shelter.

Celebrity chef Jamie Oliver shows how the new Discovery can be used during an outdoor party.

Land Rover’s innovative aluminium full-sized SUV platform provides a lightweight but durable architecture that is made up of 85% aluminium (43% recycled). This has enabled the engineers to cut overall weight by up to 480 kgs, which will have positive implications on performance and fuel economy.

For now, Jaguar Land Rover Malaysia is importing the Td6 version which is powered by a 258 ps/600 Nm 3-litre V6 turbodiesel engine. This engine features low-pressure exhaust recirculation, a 2-stage oil pump and revised fuel-injector nozzles for improved response, refinement and efficiency.

With improvements, the engine is said to deliver stronger performance than before, able to propel the Discovery from 0 – 100 km/h in 8.1 seconds with a ZF 8-speed automatic transmission.

The transmission is operated using the rotary gearshift controller that rises from the centre console, while manual changes can be done using steering wheel-mounted shift paddles.

A Land Rover would not be genuine without 4×4 for ultimate all-terrain capability. Today’s 4×4 systems in Land Rovers are sophisticated with electronic management while using still offering High and Low gear ranges with a 2-speed transfer box.

In addition, a 4-corner air suspension system is also available as an extra-cost option. This improves ride quality when driving on paved roads as well as enhances capability when off-roading.

“The new Discovery builds upon the practicality and versatility of its predecessor, offering the same supreme breadth of capability that only a Land Rover can. Pioneering technologies, lightweight aluminium architectures and advanced powertrains ensure that the new Discovery appeals to consumers of multiple levels,” said Jaguar Land Rover Malaysia’s MD, Datuk Aishah Ahmad.

The new Discovery comes with a 5-year warranty and free scheduled service as well as 3 years of complimentary roadside assist. The first 5 customers to purchase the latest model will receive a RM5,000 voucher which can be used for genuine Land Rover accessories.

In conjunction with the official launch of the new Discovery, Jaguar Land Rover Malaysia will be organizing a ‘Discovery Day’ on this weekend (January 13/14) at Sime Darby Auto Connexion Petaling Jaya and SISMA Auto Glenmarie, as well as at SISMA Auto Penang (January 20/21). As this event is by invitation only, those who are interested in attending should contact the respective showrooms first.
