Hyundai Elantra, Range Rover Evoque win top US titles

A Korean car has been chosen as the 2012 North American Car of the Year while the North American Truck of the Year is from a British brand now owned by an Indian company – the Hyundai Elantra and Range Rover Evoque, respectively.

This is the second time that Hyundai has won the title, the previous one being for the Genesis in 2009. The 50-judge panel, composed of automotive journalists in North America, were impressed by its ‘fluidic sculpture’ design, fuel efficiency and safety features which presumably collected it more points that the Ford Focus and Volkswagen Passat which were the other two finalists. As for the Evoque, which was up against the BMW X3 and Honda CR-V, it was evident that there’s been a shift in what constitutes a ‘truck’ since all three finalists are pretty much ‘crossovers’. Of course, Land Rover would argue that every model it offers is still a thoroughbred ‘4×4’ but it’s a sign of the times anyway. The title is the first for Land Rover in its biggest export market.
