Hi,
I am thinking of buying a second hand SUV registered 2005 onwards. My current top choices are between toyota fortuner & rexton. I need 7-Seater SUV for my family long distance travel (3 kids with a maid). Any thoughts in term of resale value, maintenance, spare-part price, or any other thing that can help me decide between the two? It seems that REXTON is cheaper for the model of the same year.
Hope to get some feedback soon as plan to decide this weekend! |

resale value- u'll see that ssangyong cars fare badly; Rexton 2.7xdi reg in 2005 would have dropped in value to less than half its new price. Expect RM90k - 95k. fortuner of the same year would set u back at RM120k - 130k.
maintenance & spare parts- fortuner, a very close sibling of the hilux vigo is very popular in the phills, indon & thailand, & not that bad in msia so spareparts should not be an issue. rexton, waiting period for spares is longer due to lesser network in msia (at least thats what i learn from friends who owns ssangyong cars).
comfort- hadnt sat in rexton so cant comment but others say it is much much more comfortable ride compared to fortuner. if u opt for fortuner, expect a bumpier ride but of course u can always do aftermarket improvement. |

| Hi guys, thanks for the input. BTW, since the price of REXTON has dropped so much, do you think it will drop much further in the future? Would you still consider it a good buy? My sister and my brother both drive Rexton, so far they do not have problem with maintenance as both units are still relatively new. But, for me, we are always driving TOYOTA and have never been much into a Korean car. Resale value is still important just in case we do not want to keep the car for long.I drive Toyota Wish (an MPV) but don't quite like it because it is a bit low and I am used to a taller car (been driving toyota Rav4 for the last 10 years). Kind of regret buying the toyota wish (just bought it 1st July). So, our options for the second car are still currently REXTON or Fortuner, but more to REXTON as it is so much cheaper for the same year. Do you guys have any better options for second hand 7-seater SUV other than these two?? |

if the 2005 rexton is selling at 90-95K, how much more would it drop?? say in 2 yrs time... it drops another 30%... thatz like a drop of about 27K....
say u buy the 120-130K 2005 toyota fortuner....say in 2 yrs time it drop say 30%... that would be a drop of more than 36K....
between rexton and fortuner, i think rexton is a lot more luxurious but lack brand power. While toyota has this reputation of good resale value... and so called reliability... but think again is this just a perception?
don't get me wrong... i myself is driving a toyota harrier... so far it hasn't give much problem... but i buy not because it is toyota... i buy this car because i like the overall package.. had it been a ssangyong harrier... i would still buy it.. but a lot of ppl might not buy it if it is not brand as toyota... if aftersales service is not a major issue, and u like the whole package, both interior and its exterior, why not go ahead with it? |

Thank you. We have added another option..STAVIC??? Couldn't find much review on this model. It is definitely more spacious compared to REXTON. Well..we are almost decided on REXTON but still looking for another option.. |

Why dont u consider Hyundai Santa Fe or Chevvy Captiva? Both 7 seaters with good reviews from the users.
Me myself is driving Ford Escape 3.0. Not a good resale value car though but per what cvchua said, it's your perception that matters... And I love every tiny bit of my SUV!
Goodluck! |

Anybody got any idea on the comparison of Fuel Consumption between Fortuner and Rexton?
Physically Fortuner looks gigantic, merely a fuel guzzler but Rexton, being a Korean make which is famous of high fuel consumption. So which one drinks more?
Anybody doing any research on comparing FCs of all SUVs out there in the market? I can give my inputs on Ford Escape. |

Santa Fe isnt a bad idea i think. Quite tall compared to Captive and your current Wish. The current S.Fe assembled by Inokom is quite impressive in term of styling, interior design and better upholstry & cabin utilities are neatly arranged. It's 7 seater too. New Santa Fe would cost about the same as the Wish. BTW hav u considered a pre owned Ninja King?
hi tazztham, would u like to elaborate on your opinion?

| Hi azammms, i am now using rexton (bought it 2 mths agao , 04 year. I can only share with you, it is a very nice car and economical to drive in terms of fuel consumption. I would suggest u get a mech to check the car out b4 committing as core concern will be on injectors...and so on.. i m in puchong and was lucky to have a service center here that is very helpful. If you have a choice, buy from someone you know. In fact my mech was recommending one at a cheaper price as compare to car dealers.... |

hi floyd,
just to give a few point why not getting a Fortuna.
2.5 D-4D engine not efficient, only 102ps & 260Nm no turbo intercooler no ATF cooler and expect to have the 'A/T Temp' warning light up when climbing to genting over priced to me
hey prima,
i am glad that u love your rexton. so ready for tuning box? |

yeah 102ps for a 2.5L d4d is too little horse, thumbs down here. Toyota always tune their engines conservatively due to diesel quality in this country. Good market for your tuning box, no?..
BTW the 2.5 d4d doesnt need ATF cooler, maybe u r refering to 2.7 VVTi. But then the 2.7 auto is about there with other similarly sized engine if we r talking bout horsepower. A bit pricey i agree. |

opsss. u r right. the fortuna D-4D is a manual over here. what i am saying is many Hilux auto 2.5 D-4D got A/T Temp high when doing some climbing. 2.7VVTi not sure about it. i won't say Toyota is conservative but they really know how to market their product by area. look at Vios J. another way of gaining market share.
they got the brand and all they need is to tweak the price but hiding some unseen features... |

hi floyd,
your thought is not really true. i wish but it is not coming to me. u see, those buyers hunger for power will definately won't consider Hilux but Triton or Dmax will be in the top list.
for those getting hilux is rather on the conservative side and make many consideration like branding, reliability and resale value. because of that, they are not really on the power side.
that is my perception n might be wrong. i am not saying it is not a good choice |
