History of the Golf GTI
The first generation of the VW Golf GTI went on sale in Germany in June 1976 and not many may know that VW had actually planned to produce only 5,000 units as a limited edition. However, things turned out differently when the car started appearing on roads around Europe. The 81 kW/110 bhp Golf GTI that could reach 182 km/h drew a new clientele and created the ‘GTI class’ which also started the ‘hot hatch’ craze. 5,000 units became over 1.5 million.
