21.38 kms - that's the distance the first state winner of the 'Shell 1 Litre Challenge' drove on a litre of petrol. The event began recently as a complement to the introduction of Shell's most advanced fuel economy formula in Shell FuelSave Unleaded petrol, a formula that is said to help motorists save up to one litre with every full tank. (The claim, which is backed by extensive testing, is based on a minimum tank size and fill up of 50 litres and is a comparison between standard petrol with and without the fuel economy formula. Actual savings may vary according to vehicle, driving conditions and driving
style.)

The 2-day opening event was held at a Shell station in Kota Damansara, Selangor, was the first of many more rounds which will take place in 5 major cities around Peninsular Malaysia up till early December 2009.

The light-footed winner was Ho Chee Ming and as Selangor State Champion, he was awarded more than RM3,000 worth of prizes. As the state champion, he will compete against other state champions in the finals to be held in December. For that event, the top prize will be RM45,000 in cash and RM5,000 worth of Shell fuel.

The first leg of the 'Shell 1 Litre Challenge' received overwhelming response from Malaysian motorists as more than 1,000 entries were received for the Selangor level challenge alone within 4 days.

“I was very pleased to learn that so many Malaysians were out in support of the 1 Litre Challenge as it signifies how many people are interested in becoming more fuel-efficient drivers. Their attendance and the overwhelming support we have received, thus far, testifies that ordinary Malaysian motorists can challenge themselves to travel further using only 1 litre of Shell FuelSave Unleaded petrol,” said Azman Ismail, Retail National Sales and Operations Manager, Shell Malaysia Trading Sdn Bhd.

“At Shell, we believe that not all fuels are the same and in line with this, we have made it an integral part of our business to continuously invest in research and development to ensure that our customers benefit from the latest breakthroughs in fuel technology,” he added.

Mr Ho, the champion, agreed: “I always thought that all fuels were the same but it is amazing how choosing the right fuel and being conscious about one's driving style can really play a difference when it comes to fuel efficiency. I am amazed at how far one can actually go on just one litre of Shell fuel.”

Fahrin Ahmad, Malaysia's favourite TV Host/Actor/Model, and Shell Malaysia's FuelSave Ambassador, joined in to promote and encourage motorists to practice fuel savvy habits. During the prize presentation, he urged all Malaysian motorists to beat his record (21.3 kms/litre) obtained during the 1 Litre Challenge in Germany earlier this year.
