RON95 petrol is now available at three Petronas stations in Malaysia, ahead of the official deadline of September 1 2009 which was announced by the government. The first two Petronas stations in Putrajaya had begun selling the new petrol grade from May 12 2009 and today, the Petronas station along the MRR2 in Kepong also began offering RON95.
At this morning’s event, Petronas took the opportunity to present more information about its RON95 petrol which is called 'Primax 95’. Where Petronas had previously evaded providing information on its RON92 additive package and whether it was similar to that of its RON97 petrol, Petronas Dagangan's Senior GM (Retail Business Division), Md Fadzlan Abdul Samad today declared that the SINAR G-07 additive package incorporated in the new Primax 95 petrol is superior to that used in Primax RON97 (which has the additive package SINAR G-05). He went further to say that the additive package in Primax 95 is even better than that of other RON97 petrols in Malaysia.
When asked why Primax RON97 does not share the same additive package since SINAR G-07 is superior, he said that this may eventually occur but at this time, the focus is on Primax 95 which is expected to become the dominant fuel grade for motorists. He revealed that Malaysian motorists are accepting RON95 based on early sales data at the two Putrajaya stations which shows that some 65% of motorists bought the new grade instead of RON97.
The formulation of Primax 95 has a Friction Modifier as well as a Combustion Improver, both of which enhance the performance of the fuel. In addition, there are also detergent additives which will prevent deposit formation which can degrade engine performance over time.
Primax 95 also meets Euro 2 emission standards and has reduced sulphur content of 500 ppm (parts per million), which makes it better for the environment.
Primax 95, like other RON95 petrols in Malaysia, has a retail price of RM1.75 per litre which is subsidized by the government. It has already been announced earlier than RON97 petrol will not be subsidized and will be at least RM2.00 per litre from September 1 2009.
Petronas will be switching pumps at its stations nationwide to offer Primax 95 over the next two months. Anticipating that Primax 95 will have higher sales than its RON97 Primax, it plans to have two-third of pumps at most stations offering Primax 95.
