It’s got to be the right timing for Competitive Supreme Sdn Bhd (CSSB), the sole importer and distributor for SsangYong vehicles, as they have just launched a new version of the Actyon Sports pick-up with a 6-speed automatic transmission. Given that higher fuel prices now have motorists wanting to get more out of each litre of fuel – even those who have diesel engines – the extra ratios in the transmission mean that cruising rpm will be much lower, reducing fuel consumption.
The Actyon Sport, assembled in Pekan, Pahang, is the first pick-up in Malaysia with a 6-speed automatic transmission and in fact, there are no models – petrol or diesel - anywhere near its base price range of RM89,000 (no change from before) with such a transmission. Incidentally, in Thailand, the Nissan Navara is the first to have a 6-speed automatic transmission. The 6-speed transmission was developed Drivetrain Systems International in Australia and is also supplied by the same company to SsangYong. “The gearbox is electronically-controlled and the software has been designed to maximise the characteristics of the XDi 200 XVT turbodiesel powerplant. An Artificial Intelligence program constantly monitors your driving style and adjusts the transmission’s characteristics to maximise performance according to your driving style which, in turn, optimises fuel efficiency and of course, driving pleasure. The transmission is linked to the engine via a lock-up torque converter which minimizes energy loss and further improves fuel efficiency,” explained Melvinder Singh, the General Manager of CSSB. |
 | He added that the driver can also use the ingenious dual Thumb-Tronic controls which allow gearchanges to be made via the buttons on the steering wheel or on the gearshift lever. The drivetrain has an electronic shift-on-the-fly (2H, 4H and 4L) part-time 4WD system which can be used on-road and off-road.
 | For those who may have forgotten, the XDi 200 XVT engine is a 2-litre high-performance 3rd generation commonrail turbo + intercooler direct injection diesel powerplant. It delivers 141ps (104 kW) at 4000 rpm and a maximum 310 Nm of torque between 1800 and 2700 rpm. Maximum torque is provided over the widest possible rev range for better acceleration and overtaking performance. This is currently the most powerful 2-litre turbodiesel engine in its class and its performance easily rivals competitors with much larger engine capacities of up to 3 litres. Factory claims put fuel consumption at 16.1 kms/litre (45.6 mpg) using the Extra Urban test cycle. The latest Actyon Sports has some new features such as a chrome front grille, sporty integrated ‘shark’s fin’ radio antenna on the roof, chrome centre air vents which are also adjustable, a driver’s side footrest and integrated rear seatbelt buckles with storage pockets. The pick-up is also fitted with convenience features such as an 8-way power driver’s seat with adjustable lumbar support, tilt adjustable steering wheel, front centre armrest, height & tilt adjustable front headrests, electric folding door mirrors, a custom flush-fit audio system with controls on the steering wheel, speed-sensing door locks, three rear headrests and a rear centre armrest. As already evident from a test-drive to Penang last year, the Actyon Sports offers a comfortable ride with its coil spring rear suspension instead of the usual leafspring set-up of many pick-ups. This suspension layout was used as the Actyon Sports is derived from a SUV concept. Customers now also have more optional accessories to add to their vehicle and CSSB has them specially developed for the Actyon Sports. The accessories are a full canopy or the sports rear deck cover (RM3,900), rear D-pillar (RM1,120) and 18-inch alloy wheels with 255/60 tyres (RM3,300 after a trade-in with the original set of wheels and tyres) for a more sporty look. If the customer takes the sports deck cover, the rear D-pillar is included in the price. Other options include cruise control and leather seats. The annual road tax (private registration) for the Actyon Sports is the lowest in its class at RM439.20 due to the 2-litre engine size and for this year, privately-registered units qualify for the government rebate of RM625 announced recently.
