Proton Chairman Datuk Mohamad Azlan Hashim told the media today that the company has embarked on a precautionary measure to voluntarily recall 2,996 units of Proton Waja 1.6 which were fitted with aluminium alloy wheels. The affected cars were sold from June 2004 to January this year. "During our accelerated testing of this particular component, the alloy wheels encountered some difficulties and failed the test," he said after Proton Holdings Annual General Meeting. The company’s joint Chief Operating Officer Datuk Kisai Rahmat added that during the testing, which is a standard procedure, there was an ‘incident of a failure" which related to a crack in the alloy rim. He did not reveal the manufacturer of the wheel but confirmed that Proton stopped using the rim from the day the crack occurred. Datuk Azlan said that so far there has been no failure of such wheels experienced in the market. However, the recall, which will include inspection of the alloy wheels, is a precautionary measure which signifies Proton's serious commitment towards quality and customer satisfaction. The Waja units affected by the recall have chassis numbers between PL1CF1SNR4F192489 and PL1CF1SRR5F217757. Owners of these units should bring their cars to any of the 136 Proton service centres nationwide for the inspection and should any original rim be found to need replacement, there will be no cost to the owner.
