Mitsubishi Motors today launched the new generation of the L200 Storm in Thailand (where it is called ‘Triton’, taking over the from the Strada that was the previous generation’s name). The model is expected to build on the success of the previous generations and to be a major export model from Thailand to the rest of the world. Since 1988, over 700,000 units of the L200 have been exported worldwide.
The new generation takes on a bolder style with the familiar ‘corporate nose’ featuring the three diamonds. Those with long memories may recall seeing some of the styling elements in concept vehicles shown earlier such as the 2002 Pajero Evo 2+2 concept and the Pajero Evolution racer. In designing this new generation, the stylists gave more attention to the looks than before and it shows!
Various bodystyles are available and the drivetrain is now with the Super Select Full-Time 4x4 system as well as a 4x2 option. On some versions, active stability and traction control systems are offered along with 17-inch wheels.
Engine choices at this time number four in all; three of them are turbodiesel 2.5-litre units and one is a 3.2-litre. Power outputs range from 66 kW/90 ps and 196 Nm to 121 kW/165 ps and 321 Nm. Three of the engines use an advanced common rail fuel delivery system which boosts output.
Following the Thai launch, exports will commence to markets as far as Europe and Africa. In as far as Malaysia is concerned, it is likely that the new model will be seen faster than before as Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia has been importing the model from Thailand rather than having it assembled locally. It is now apparent why the company chose to leave out an automatic from its current line-up and this would certainly be found in the new model. So unless MMM decides to go for local assembly, you should see the new Storm in the showrooms before the end of 2005.
