Malaysia's vehicle population

As at December 31, 2011, there were 21,401,269 vehicles registered with the JPJ. These
include motorcycles, motorcars, buses, taxis, rental vehicles, goods vehicles, excavators, and
other vehicles for which registration is required. All data based on statistics supplied by the JPJ

With over 3 million cars registered in the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur, which is only 243 square kms
in size, it's not surprising that there is severe congestion daily. The average of 2.95 persons/car
refers to the national average and is based on a projected population figure of around 28.725 million
shown on the website of the Statistics Department. It is not possible to provide a figure for each state
as the department's validated population data is only up to the end of 2010.
