Nearly two years after launching the 308 Turbo, Peugeot gives it some major mechanical revisions, extra equipment and a restyled body kit to keep it fresh and make it an even better value package than it already is. 

 

This is a very different car from the one Peugeot launched. It now gets the full-fat version of the1.6-litre turbocharged engine that is good for 156 bhp and 240 Nm which, coincidentally, allows it to level peg with its closest Euro hatch rival, the VW Golf TSI. There is also a 6-speed auto fitted that helps improve economy and make it more fun to drive. 

 

The improved engine feels muscular from very low revs and the gearbox finally proves that the French can build an auto that doesn’t act like a schizophrenic dockworker in Marseille. The ride is firm but not harsh and though the handling isn’t hot-hatch sharp, it will easily keep up with the Golf.

 

Where it manages to nose ahead is when you tot up the equipment list. This car has everything  - and the proverbial kitchen sink - so it’s a moot point to tick off a comparison list.

 

If you are in the market for a C-segment hatch/sedan and have only RM120k to spend, you must seriously consider this car. It drives very well, is loaded with kit and is amazing value for money. I won’t argue about how such a thing is possible, because at the end of the day, the winner is the buyer and that means you.
