USED CAR: 1st Generation Volvo S40

Posted on December 24, 2010 10:11 PM
Volvos have always had a rather staid image. It’s only recently with new models like the funky C30 hatchback/coupe and XC60 SUV that the public have started to receive them as mainstream cars. Just.

The first generation S40 (produced between 1995 and 2004) was originally planned to be the mould-breaker for Volvo, moving from boring, boxy family movers to hip and stylish sedan for young upstarts. That never worked out as well as Volvo had hoped. Having learnt their lesson, Volvo went berserk with their next car - the odd-looking S80, which unfortunately still could not shake off the stigma of the brand.

But let’s forget about all that. Now that you can openly say that you drive a Volvo (doesn’t matter if it’s an old one, it still commands respect nowadays), it's the perfect time to get a used one as prices have depreciated all these years due to their previously ungainly image. These days a good condition original S40 can be yours for less than RM40,000 while a post-facelift model goes for around RM60,000. They might not appear to be absolute bargains now, but be assured that they will hardly depreciate any further in the next couple of years.

For that money, you get a compact executive sedan that is just a bit larger than a Proton Waja (and surprise, surprise, it’s built on the same basic platform) so don’t expect to have any extra rear legroom to spare. But then again average Malaysians aren’t that tall anyway so most of your friends should be able to get in the rear seats.

Interior quality is just about alright, though if you’re moving up from an old local car, it will feel like stepping into a luxury limo. The sombre grey plastic that dominates the dashboard is outstanding for being entirely forgettable, but do remember that the Swedes favour function over style so ergonomics are top-notch. Leather upholstery is standard across the range and in any colour that’s grey or black.

Only two engines were made available here, both 2.0-litre petrol units with the choice of a light pressure turbo. The 2.0T is naturally more sprightly and is the engine of choice for some spirited driving but do take into account the extra cost of maintaining a forced inducted engine. Full service history from an official dealer or Volvo specialist is a must to ensure that the engines have been taken care of properly.

Being a Volvo, safety is always a top priority and it has a full complement of deformable crash structures at the front and sides, plus the usual dual front airbags. The S40 was the first ever car to be awarded 4 stars in the EuroNCAP crash test (quite an achievement back then) so you can ferry your kids around in it with total piece of mind. Now what could be more important than that?[Hafriz Shah]
