Tablets for your engine cooling system

Dyno-Tab additives come in tablet form which can dissolve within less than 11 minutes (according to an independent test report)
You’ve probably seen the little Dyno-Tab ‘tablets’ on sale at convenience stores and supermarkets, their purpose being to enhance the qualities of petrol and diesel fuel in your vehicle for improved performance and less pollution. The products have been sold globally since the late 1990s and according to Chempex Continental Sdn Bhd, the local importers and distributors, using these additives do not affect new vehicle warranties. In any case, the manufacturer has product liability insurance which means you can claim compensation if it can be proved that the tablets caused engine damage. However, it is stated that the company has never had any such claims in all the years the product has been sold.
The ‘tablet’ concept is actually a clever one because it provides you with what you really need and none of the ‘extra’ which add cost to manufacturing and packing. Basically, in other additive products, the additive is mixed with a carrier fluid and then stored in a container. The fluid adds weight and the container is an extra item that you are charged for. The Chempex people decided it was much simpler to just give you the additive in a compressed tablet form that can dissolve easily – within 10 minutes and 10 seconds, according to an independent test report – and mix with the fuel in the tank.
Apart from the fuel additives, Chempex also applies the same concept to additives for other areas of the vehicle and recently, Chempex Continental began selling tablets for the cooling system. There are three products offered – Cooler Coolant, Stop-Leak and Radiator Flush. All three products come in the form of tablets which are dropped into the radiator.
Cooler Coolant is claimed to restore coolant life by replenishing critical coolant additives. It also adds special wetting agents to engine coolants (new and used) that improve heat transfer as the coolant moves over engine surfaces. The result is reduced operating temperatures.
As for Stop-Leak, this would be suitable for older engines where seals may have worn out and the radiator coolant slowly leaks. However, Chempex says that the proprietary formula is used by one carmaker which adds it to the radiator fluid of every vehicle it produces. It is said to permanently stop leaks so that you don’t have engine damage due to loss of coolant.
Radiator Flush is said to ‘clean while you drive’ after you have dropped the tablets into the radiator. The additive dislodges deposits in the cooling system which collect over time and affect heat transfer. After a period of using the additive, the radiator can be flushed and it should be much cleaner than just a normal flush where you simply drain all the fluid and refill it.
Stop-Leak has a retail price of RM15 (2 tablets) while Radiator Flush and Cooler Coolant are priced at RM19.90 (3 tablets a pack). All Dyno-Tab products are imported only from the factory in the USA.
