New BHPetrol infiniti Diesel

Posted on September 16, 2009 12:00 AM

Since September 1 2009, the petroleum companies have been required to sell fuels which meet the upgraded Euro-2M standard that sets a maximum limit of 500 parts per million (ppm) of sulphur in the fuel. Previously, the limit was 3000 ppm and in as far as diesel is concerned, it’s taken 15 years to go from Euro-1 to Euro-2 (Singapore is already at Euro-4). The Euro-2M standard applies to both petrol and diesel fuels and BHPetrol’s product is known as infiniti Diesel, now available at its 300+ stations in Peninsular Malaysia.

Officially launched today, infiniti Diesel is claimed to be the best diesel fuel in Malaysia and according to James Khoo, BHPetrol’s General Manager (Retail), this strong claim comes from the fact that it has the maximum treat rate (maximum amount of additive) in the fuel as well as the superiority of the additive package itself.

“Generally, all base fuels are the same, be they petrol or diesel, and it is the additive package that differentiates one product from another and makes the big difference in performance,” he explained. He said that BHPetrol’s additive package, produced by a leading German company, includes a proprietary, highly reactive key ingredient which is extremely effective in cleaning deposits in engines and fuel injectors.

“It’s particularly important for the injectors to be kept free of deposits since the nozzles are extremely small and even a small blockage can affect performance as the diesel fuel spray will not be at optimum,” he said.

Apart from the additive’s effectiveness, BHPetrol also puts in a high dosage; in fact, its dosage is the maximum recommended by the additive supplier. This high dosage means stronger cleaning power and in an industry-recognized test (Peugeot XUD-9), infiniti Diesel was found to have twice the cleaning power compared to typical European-branded diesel fuels.

The additive package is an expensive element in the fuel and putting in what is suggested to be more than other companies would mean that BHPetrol spends more on its fuel, a fact which K.T. Tan, its Managing Director, did not deny. Yet, because fuel prices are controlled by the government, each litre cannot be sold for more than RM1.70 (the present price) which is what every other company also charges.

“Yes, it does cost us more to put in extra additive but it is something we feel we should do for our customers. It gives them extra value for their money when they buy our fuel and when they have a good experience with it – which I know they will get since we offer the best - we certainly hope they will continue coming back to buy again and again!” he said.

Diesel fuel is also prone to water collecting in the tank and corrosion occurs in many areas of the fuel delivery system. BHPetrol’s infiniti Diesel has an anti-corrosion agent which prevents this corrosion and additionally, there is also a foam inhibitor which makes filling up easier and less messy.

The new infiniti Diesel is available at 300+ BHPetrol stations

Infiniti Diesel is therefore a fuel of high quality and because the engine will run cleaner, pollution from exhaust fumes will be lowered which is good for the environment. A clean engine also burns fuel more efficiently and with less waste, mileage will be better. Mr Tan could not give a specific mileage gain over the pre-Euro-2M diesel but was confident that anyone using it will definitely enjoy fuel-savings [compared to the previous diesel grade].

Owners of pick-ups and SUVs will be happy to have diesel fuel of higher quality now

The availability of a better diesel fuel should please pick-up and SUV owners who have long been waiting for this upgrade in standards. The engines in their vehicles are actually designed to run on higher grade fuel and they have been frustrated that the government has dragged its feet on the matter. In fact, the manufacturers also want to offer better diesel models but because Malaysia has lagged so far behind in upgrading its diesel standards, many models (which have more efficient and cleaner engines) have not been sold here.

Mercedes-Benz, for example, has a range of advanced diesel models which are extremely fuel-efficient and have exceptionally low pollution levels but they need much better fuel than Euro-2M to run. Recently, the company brought in a C250 CDI and in order for journalists to have a go at it, the company had also to importEuro-4 diesel fuel for the purpose.
