Perodua starts rear seatbelt installation exercise

In support of the implementation of the compulsory rear seatbelt usage law on January 1 2009, Perodua has begun to install rear seatbelts for its models which did not have the seatbelts originally. Currently, there are about 435,000 units of Perodua cars which need to be fitted with rear seatbelts.

In addition, there are about 110,000 units of Kancil which were manufactured without anchorage points and these will exempted from the requirement. The anchorage points are welded on during the assembly process and cannot be added later on so it is not possible to install the seatbelts (drilling holes in the floor is extremely dangerous and should not be done as it can weaken the chassis). Those units without anchorage points will be given a special sticker to indicate to authorities that they are exempted.

Perodua owners who wish to have their cars fitted with the rear seatbelts are encouraged to call any of the 43 appointed Perodua service branches nationwide to arrange for an appointment. The installation will take between 30 to 90 minutes, depending on the model. The fitting of the rear seatbelts is free of charge (inclusive of parts) as the expenses will be borne by Perodua as part of its contribution to road safety and Corporate Social Responsibility.
