Renault Sand'Up

Posted on October 30, 2008 12:00 AM

The Renault Sand'Up concept is a unique development by Renault’s design centre in Brazil which caters for the Latin American markets. It is a more advanced concept adapted from a production model called the Sandero Stepway (an urban crossover SUV available only in Brazil and Argentina), and is said to offer the benefits of a convertible as well. In designing the Sand'Up, Renault has taken into consideration the special requirements of its different markets around the world and in this concept, it offers interior flexibility that will be appreciated by the occupants of the vehicle.

The Sand'Up concept is characterized by its two arches of aluminium roof, like those of a house, which extend all the way to the rear lights. The dark gray colour was specially chosen to emphasise functionality with red inserts giving a hint of sportiness. At the rear, the open frame descends to a half-door which folds flat for loading. The more rugged part of the design is at the lower portion with large 18-inch wheels and red brake calipers visible inside them.

The cabin has a spirit of modernity and sportiness which is a continuation of what is seen on the exterior. Two tone of gray are used for the interior trim and upholstery. Again, red is also used on certain details (like the seat trim) with aluminium providing highlights of certain design elements.

In order to offer multiple uses for this vehicle, the Sand'Up Concept has many innovations. It can be a cargo-mover, taking in items of varying sizes and the cabin can be configured easily for this, thanks to an intelligent mechanism which lengthens the floorspace by up to 40 cm. This then creates a 1.7 metre long floor that can take of motorcycles, jet skis, bicycles or surfboards, up to a load of 500 kgs. If the weather is bad, the cargo area can also be closed off.

Other ideas include the use of LEDs for the rear lights to provide brighter and more durable illumination and the door mirrors use small cameras to acquire images which are displayed to the dashboard monitor. Needless to say, GPS navigation is standard.

Access into the cabin is convenient with the opening of the doors using an electro-hydraulic system. The doors are made of clear glass which gives the occupants a unique experience and the driver has exceptional visibility along the sides too. This also lets more light into the cabin, creating a pleasant ambience.

The Sand'Up has advanced ideas which may not be seen in production models just yet but as a motorshow concept, it should serve to create more interest in the Sandero Stepway which can be purchased today.
