A Malaysia-made car will be among the classic cars to be showcased at one of America’s most prestigious motoring shows, the Hilton Head Concours d’Elegance Motoring Festival which will be held in the state of South Carolina this weekend. The Malaysian car is the TD 2000 classic sportscar which is produced by TD Cars (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd at a plant in Shah Alam, Selangor. TD Cars Malaysia’s Managing Director Edward Teo said that event is an annual one which is held at the Coastal Discovery Museum in the town of Honey Horn. “This is the sixth time a Concours d’ Elegance is being held there and some 150 classic cars are going to be displayed. We’re confident that our TD 2000, made here in Malaysia, will capture the attention of classic cars aficionados, especially those who love the old British sportscars,” he said.
Besides Malaysia, the TD 2000 is currently available in Singapore, Australia, Japan, Brunei, Egypt, Great Britain and New Zealand. Originally developed in Australia, rights to the TD 2000 design were bought over by Malaysian businessmen who transferred manufacturing to Malaysia and also upgraded the engineering.
Apart from the addition of more modern mechanical features (but retaining the classic looks of the British MG sportscar), the TD 2000 also got a Toyota 3S-FE engine (the same as used in earlier Celica models) which the company buys brand new from Toyota Tsusho Corporation, the trading arm of Toyota Motor Corporation. The car has met the stringent Australian Design Rules with regards to safety and is available with manual and automatic transmissions, also made by Toyota.
