What’s new?
Well, pretty much everything. The Ford Galaxy is now in its third, most exciting looking generation thanks to the new ‘kinetic design’ philosophy that imbues most new Fords with some visual verve. It’s still a large multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) after all, but the details are much nicer to take in compared to before.
It’s based on the smaller Ford MPV, the S-Max, and shares the same 2.3-litre engine and six-speed automatic gearbox. It has identical wheelbase too but with longer rear overhang for more third row space, and is taller a well.
What’s it like?
Very good really. It’s larger and heavier and can’t entirely mask those fact but otherwise drives very much like an S-Max does, which means it handles more like a sporty sedan than a big family lugger.
Two key contributions are the steering and ride/body control. Feeling from the helm isn’t too lightly weighted and feedback is rich, not something many MPVs can claim. Plus the Galaxy doesn’t tip into corners and the body is kept mostly flat while the ride quality is admirable.
There’s enough space inside to stow a family of seven and pretty much anything else too, with six roof storage lockers, all rear seats fold flat and come with adustable backrests. Perhaps the only complaint is that the interior, while well-built and quiet, isn’t very exciting and features a lot of plastic.
Should I buy one?
Yes. European MPVs are short on the ground and the Galaxy comes with a five-star NCAP rating and five-year warranty. So there’s really no reason not to get one.
